vsAthenaHQ alternative: a free tier and nine models vs a measured loop
AthenaHQ is the easiest product in this category to start using — there is a genuinely free plan covering five models, and Starter is $295/month for nine. It also connects Search Console, GA4 and Shopify, and will create content from the opportunities it finds. SERPclimber costs $149/month per site, covers five engines, and treats every change as an experiment with automatic rollback. Here is the honest comparison.

SERPclimberAthenaHQThe short verdict
AthenaHQ positions itself as the command centre for AEO and GEO, and it is the most complete answer-engine product of the ones we compare against at anything like this price. It tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Grok, with more models on request. It reports citations and source intelligence, prioritises opportunities, and — unusually — creates content assets from those opportunities rather than only recommending them. It also runs citation outreach, and integrates Google Search Console, GA4 and Shopify.
Two things make it hard to argue with. The Essential plan is free — not a trial, a free tier with 300 credits across five models. And Starter at $295/month covers nine models with integrations, CSV export and a content optimisation agent.
SERPclimber covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude at $149/month per site. The difference is not really the engine list; it is what counts as done. Athena's loop ends at published content and improved visibility scores. Ours ends at evidence: every change we publish runs as a live experiment against that page's own baseline, and variants that lose revert automatically. Nothing on Athena's site describes controlled testing.
So: if you want the widest AEO toolkit with a free way in and content production included, Athena is the stronger product and you should try the free plan before you talk to us. If your problem is that you have published plenty and cannot tell which of it worked, that gap is the reason we exist.

~/serpclimberbest forChoose SERPclimber if…
You have published enough already and cannot tell which of it helped. You want the page that is slipping identified from your own Search Console data, a rewrite drafted against that page’s real queries, and a controlled test that either keeps the change or rolls it back on its own. You run one site or a few, and a flat $149 per site beats credits you have to forecast.
Choose AthenaHQ if…
You want the widest AEO toolkit and a free way to start. You need Google AI Mode, Copilot or Grok. You sell on Shopify and want revenue attributed back to AI visibility. You need citation outreach, SSO, audit logs or SOC 2. You are an agency running many brands. Athena is the more complete platform on every one of those axes, and the free plan means testing it costs you nothing.
Start with their free plan — genuinely
We do not have a free tier, and Athena does. Not a time-limited trial: a permanent Essential plan with $25 of credit, five models, unlimited members, competitor insights and content recommendations.
If you are still deciding whether AI visibility is a problem worth funding at all, that is the cheapest honest way to find out, and telling you otherwise would be a bad-faith comparison. Go and look at your own numbers first.
What the free plan will not tell you is whether a change you make causes an improvement. Credits get spent on measurement, and measurement of this kind is correlational — visibility went up, and several things changed that month. That is the question our experiments answer, and it is the reason to look at us after you have established the problem exists.
- Essential: free forever, 300 credits, 5 models, unlimited members
- No credit card and no sales call to start
- Starter at $295/mo unlocks 9 models and the integrations
- Agency partnerships are demo-gated rather than self-serve
Both connect Search Console. Only one runs a test
Athena is one of the few products in this category that integrates Google Search Console, and it uses it well — showing SEO and AEO performance side by side so you can see the two channels together.
We use Search Console for something narrower and more opinionated: to decide what to work on next. Which pages lost clicks against their own recent baseline, and which queries sit just outside the position where they would start earning clicks. That becomes a work queue rather than a dashboard.
Then the part that has no equivalent on their side. When a change ships, it runs as a live experiment against that page's own prior performance. If the variant loses, it reverts without you watching. You end the month knowing which twelve changes you made and which of them earned their place.
This is a real difference in what the product is for, not a feature checklist item. Athena tells you where you stand. We tell you whether what you did worked.
- Both: Google Search Console connected and reported
- AthenaHQ: SEO and AEO performance shown side by side
- SERPclimber: Search Console drives the work queue, not just the report
- SERPclimber: 12 experiment starts per site per month, losing variants auto-revert
Where AthenaHQ is simply the better buy
You sell on Shopify. Their Shopify integration publishes AEO-optimised content and attributes revenue back to it. We have nothing comparable, and for an ecommerce brand that link between visibility and revenue is close to the whole point.
You need citation outreach. Athena will identify and target the third-party sources shaping AI answers about you. That is a genuinely different activity from improving your own pages, and we do not do it.
You are an agency or an enterprise. Tiered agency partnerships, SSO, audit logs, multi-region support, brand voice enforcement, review workflows, SOC 2 and GDPR. We are built for one operator on one site; none of that exists here.
- Shopify publishing plus revenue attribution — not available here
- Citation outreach to third-party sources — not available here
- SSO, audit logs, SOC 2, multi-region — not available here
- Nine models including Google AI Mode, Copilot and Grok
A fair summary: AthenaHQ is broader, has a free tier, and produces more kinds of output. SERPclimber is narrower and answers one question they do not — did this change actually work.
If that question is the one you keep failing to answer, SEO Experiments is the surface to read next, and AI Visibility covers the tracking side.
Frequently asked questions
The Essential plan is free and permanent, with $25 of credit (300 credits) across five AI models and unlimited members. Starter is $295/month for 3,600 credits and nine models, plus GA4, Search Console and Shopify integrations, CSV export and a content optimisation agent. Enterprise is custom-priced. API access and extra credits are paid add-ons on Starter, and annual billing saves 17%.
At the free tier, obviously yes — we have no free plan and they do. On paid plans it reverses: $295/month for Starter against $149/month per site here. The bigger difference is predictability. Ours is flat per site; theirs is credit-based, so what you actually spend depends on how many models and actions you consume.
Yes, and it is a genuine free tier rather than a trial — the Essential plan gives you 300 credits across five models, unlimited members, competitor insights and content recommendations, with no credit card required. If you are still establishing whether AI visibility is a problem worth budget, start there.
Both cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude. Athena also covers Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Grok on its paid tier, and will add models on request. We track five engines and do not offer those three.
Controlled experiments or split tests are not documented anywhere on their site, so we will not claim what they can or cannot do — only that it is not a described feature. SERPclimber runs each published change as a live experiment against that page’s own baseline and reverts losing variants automatically, with 12 experiment starts per site each month.
Yes. A common shape would be Athena on the free or Starter plan for broad model coverage, citation outreach and Shopify work, with SERPclimber handling the write-publish-measure loop on the pages you care most about. Both connect Search Console, so expect some duplicated reporting.
